Glycol-based heat trans­fer flu­ids are a key part of the heat­ing and cool­ing sys­tems at many indus­tri­al sites and prop­er­ties. A cor­rectly selec­ted glycol with high-qual­ity inhib­it­ors pre­vents freez­ing, pro­tects against cor­ro­sion and keeps the sys­tem run­ning without dis­rup­tion all year round.

Pro­pyl­ene or ethyl­ene?

Pro­pyl­ene glycol

Pro­pyl­ene glycol is a widely used heat trans­fer flu­id, par­tic­u­larly where safety and the spe­cif­ic require­ments of the applic­a­tion are import­ant. It is widely used, for example:

• in the food industry
• in cool­ing pro­cesses
• in indus­tri­al pro­duc­tion plants
• in heat­ing sys­tems for arti­fi­cial turf pitches
• in ice rink and refri­ger­a­tion plant sys­tems

Pro­pyl­ene is often seen as the “safer option” in cer­tain applic­a­tions, but like all tech­nic­al flu­ids it is not com­pletely non-tox­ic. Glycol solu­tions also always con­tain inhib­it­ors that pre­vent cor­ro­sion and intern­al wear in the sys­tem. Cor­rect hand­ling, dos­ing and mon­it­or­ing of the system’s con­di­tion there­fore always play an import­ant role.

Pro­pyl­ene glycol has a slightly high­er vis­cos­ity than ethyl­ene glycol and is typ­ic­ally also more expens­ive. Cor­rectly dimen­sioned and with high-qual­ity inhib­it­ors, how­ever, it deliv­ers excel­lent per­form­ance in demand­ing con­di­tions.

At many muni­cip­al sites, such as heated arti­fi­cial turf pitches, heated pro­pyl­ene glycol cir­cu­lat­ing in the pipe­work keeps the pitch free of ice and snow even in the cold­est months.

Ethyl­ene glycol

Ethyl­ene glycol is a tech­nic­ally very effi­cient heat trans­fer flu­id. Its advant­ages include:

• bet­ter vis­cos­ity
• good heat trans­fer capa­city
• cost-effect­ive­ness

It is ideal for indus­tri­al and HVAC applic­a­tions where tech­nic­al per­form­ance and eco­nomy are pri­or­it­ies.

Like pro­pyl­ene glycol, ethyl­ene glycol con­tains inhib­it­ors to pre­vent cor­ro­sion and ensure a long sys­tem life. The cor­rect con­cen­tra­tion, reg­u­lar mon­it­or­ing and, where neces­sary, labor­at­ory test­ing are part of respons­ible use.
